Welcome to The Canmore Trust Podcast, where we share conversations of hope, support and connection.

In this tenth episode, John Gibson is joined by Sharon Johnstone, who shares the moving story of her son, Lewis. A big personality at 6ft 5 and the eldest in his family, Lewis dreamed of playing professional football. Sharon reflects on how sport can bring connection but also how intense pressure can deeply affect young players’ mental health.

She speaks openly about feeling failed by the system – from the lack of NHS support to medication that may have made things worse.

Sharon also discusses the devastating effects of online bullying, her determination to seek help and her call for greater kindness and accountability.

Sharon shares powerful moments from her grief journey – the first time she laughed after losing Lewis, her pride, as a mother, in who he was – imperfections and all – and the peer support group she founded in Ayr to help others also impacted.
